I read an article in my local newspaper today and my blood pressure pretty much went through the roof. The article which you can read here http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/11-06/11-14-06/22local.htm tells of eight immigrant workers who sued their employer for overtime pay that they didn't receive. Now if they're all legal immigrants fine, but when I made a couple of calls the people I spoke with only knew for sure that the man mentioned in the article was definitely legal. I also heard that one of the people interviewed said that it didn't matter if they were legal or not just that the company involved did the wrong thing. Bet that was a lawyer.
I think it's disgusting. I'm willing to bet that at least one of those people were illegal. Every other time I hear a news story involving any kind of immigrant around here, they're not legal. There was a man who died recently while working on a house, when a freak accident allowed him to make contact with a power line. He was found to be an illegal. Every other time that I read about a drug bust some of the perpetrators are illegal. Every time I go to the store I hear Spanish everywhere, which wasn't the case even last year. Don't get me wrong we've always had decent people of Hispanic descent around here but most were second generation and everyone spoke English. Now it's like I moved south of the border. I don't know what's going on, but if it's gotten to the point where our legal system is protecting aliens and retrieving wages they never should have had in the first place, I don't know what to say.
This area needs jobs. The reason these types of jobs aren't necessarily the best around here is that you can be guaranteed arthritis working with fish. And they stink. So if the money isn't enough to feed your family on, maybe it's not worth it. The fourteen dollars that go directly into an immigrant's pocket is only ten to an American who actually pays taxes. Ten dollars is not a lot and might not be enough to live on. So doing a job like that is a last option. What should be happening is that the companies should be forced to offer a better wage but they're not because of the endless supply of illegals who are willing to work for what should be ten dollars take home pay, but for them is fourteen. I can't believe how anyone would back up a system like this. And if our legal system is now doing it, I think all hope is lost. And the revolution can't come fast enough.
Or the bird flu, if you want to go that route.
